About the museum
The castle of Mombasiglio had been a fief since the year 1000 of the Lords of Carassone, who ceded it to the bishop of Asti in 1134. It later passed to the marquises of Ceva and to various noble families. Badly damaged in the 16th century during the wars between France and Spain, in 1602 it became the property of the Trotti Sandri family, who had it restored. In 1796 Napoleonic troops were quartered there.
On the first floor is the Museo Bonaparte, which holds the largest collection of original prints and etchings by Giuseppe Pietro Bagetti on Napoleon's first Italian campaign. The Turin painter executed, on commission from Bonaparte himself, a series of works that form a careful geographical, economic and social survey of the territory. The museum also includes uniforms, collections of lead soldiers and battle models.
The castle tower houses the Museo dei marmi e delle pietre del territorio (Museum of the Marbles and Stones of the Territory) and allows visitors to climb to a viewpoint over the surrounding mountains and valleys. The site is managed together with the Municipality of Mombasiglio and is visited through CoopCulture.
