About the museum
The castle stands on a rocky spur overlooking the Évançon torrent and controls access to the Val d'Ayas. A family and a castle at Verrès are documented from 1287, and archaeologists have found traces of settlement already in late Roman times. The present structure dates from around 1390 and is attributed to Ibleto di Challant.
The building has a compact, square form on three floors connected by a monumental stone staircase: on the ground floor were the guard rooms and armouries, on the first floor the lords' apartments, and on the top floor the service rooms. Among its most distinctive features are the twin-light windows and the kitchen with three fireplaces, connected to the dining hall by a serving hatch.
In 1536 René di Challant adapted the defences to firearms, adding a thick curtain wall with loopholes, buttresses and towers.
