About the museum
The castle of Montecuccolo, in the Modena Apennines, was the seat of the counts of Montecuccoli, the family that dominated much of the Frignano. It is a complex divided into an upper village, enclosed by the walls and formed by the fortress and the Podesteria, and a lower village around the square. The oldest core is the keep (mastio); the other parts were built between the 13th and 16th centuries, and by the mid-16th century the fortress had become a stately residence with frescoed rooms.
Today the castle houses a museum route run by the association Castelli Estensi. The Museo Raimondo Montecuccoli, founded in 2021, commemorates the family, the history of the Frignano between 1100 and 1600 and the military exploits of the condottiero and writer Raimondo Montecuccoli. The other sections include the donation of Raffaele Biolchini, the collection of the Museo Naturalistico del Frignano “F. Minghelli”, the cycle “Il paese ritrovato” by Gino Covili, 35 nativity scenes by Giuseppe Ricci and the Governor’s room with Renaissance costumes.
In the village there is also a medieval tavern and a small balsamic vinegar cellar, placed in the Trebbo tower at 873 metres above sea level.
