About the museum
The Pinacoteca di Castiglion Fiorentino is housed in the church of Sant’Angelo, in the Cassero area, the highest and most fortified part of the town, and is part of the Sistema museale castiglionese together with the Museo civico archeologico, the underground archaeological route, the historic holdings of the library and the Torre del Cassero. It collects works of sacred art from churches and monasteries in the town and its territory.
At the entrance are the wooden statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, once placed above the Porta Romana, and a fine painted cross from the second half of the 13th century, among the most important examples of painting in the Arezzo area. In the Sacrestia Vecchia are gathered precious medieval goldwork objects: the 13th-century Croce Santa, in enamel and filigree with precious stones, which contains fragments of relics given by Louis IX of France to the blessed Mansueto da Castiglione, and the 14th-century Busto di sant’Orsola, a silver reliquary bust painted with enamels, glass pastes and pearls.
The painting section includes Tuscan-school paintings on panel and canvas from the 13th to the 18th century, among them a 14th-century Maestà by Taddeo Gaddi (c. 1328), a Saint Michael the Archangel (c. 1480) and the Stigmata of Saint Francis (1486) by Bartolomeo della Gatta. The display is up to date and equipped with multimedia tools.
