About the museum

The museum occupies the church of Santa Maria della Fraternita, also known as Sant’Eufemia because it holds the relics of the saint. The building stands among the houses of the Castello borough of Foiano della Chiana; it dates from the early 16th century and was enlarged and enriched in the following centuries. Inside is preserved a carved wooden coffered ceiling of the 16th century, together with the choir lofts and the organ decoration.

The church houses the civic museum, which the Comune of Foiano della Chiana opened in 1975 and which in 2025 celebrated fifty years of activity with a cycle of meetings and concerts.

The best-known piece is the Madonna and Child in white-glazed terracotta, attributed to Andrea della Robbia on a design by Luca and dated to around 1460, also known as the Madonna della Neve. Also on display are the canvases with Stories of Saint Eufemia and Saint Lucy by Giovanni Camillo Sagrestani, which form part of a collection of 17th-century paintings.
