About the museum
The church of Santa Maria Maggiore stands at the foot of the civita of Tuscania, along the via Clodia, and was the city’s first cathedral. Its origins go back to the 8th century, but the building was largely rebuilt between the late 11th and the early 12th century, and later restructured into its present three-aisled layout.
By ancient privilege it is the only church in Tuscania with an immersion baptismal font. Some original frescoes survive inside, including a Last Judgment above the apse. The church is managed by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Lazio.
