About the museum
The museum is housed in the Franciscan convent founded in 1247 next to the church of Santa Maria del Riposo, remodelled in the 15th and 16th centuries and endowed with a central cloister with arcades.
The first section opened in 1988 with four rooms on the ground floor dedicated to the funerary complexes of the Hellenistic age (4th–2nd century BC). The grave goods from three rock-cut tombs of the Curunas family stand out, with sarcophagi in nenfro (volcanic tuff), ceramics from various Etruscan and Faliscan centres, and bronzes linked to the banquet and to the world of women.
In 1997 two rooms were opened on the upper floor: one on the history of the convent and of ancient Tuscania, the other with the oldest evidence from the area's necropoleises (7th century BC). The upper-floor galleries also present local finds and the history of the Campanari family, linked to the 19th-century excavations and to Etruscology.
