About the museum
Città della Scienza was born in 1987 from an idea of the scientist Vittorio Silvestrini, who had organised the Futuro Remoto festival at the Mostra d'Oltremare; from the success of that experience the Fondazione IDIS took shape. The centre was built at Bagnoli, in the industrial sheds of the former steelworks area, to reconvert an area hit by the crisis of the plant. The first lot was inaugurated in 1996, the Science Centre took its definitive configuration in 2001, and the Congress Centre with the other services was added in 2003.
On 4 March 2013 an arson fire destroyed four of the six sheds, that is the entire Science Centre; as early as November of the same year the museum reopened in temporary structures. The reconstruction went through difficult years, with disagreements between the Government, the Comune and the Region and a management crisis that led to the placing of the foundation under external administration (commissariamento) in 2017. The Planetario and Corporea, the museum of the human body, were opened to the public between 2016 and 2017.
Today the Science Centre offers interactive exhibitions designed to be touched and experimented with: in addition to Corporea and the Planetarium, it hosts the permanent exhibition Insetti & Co., an annual temporary exhibition, laboratory spaces for weekly activities for families and schools, and the annual popularisation event Futuro Remoto.
