About the museum
The Anfiteatro Flavio di Pozzuoli was built in the second half of the 1st century AD under the emperors Nero, Vespasian and Titus, to stage great public spectacles like the Colosseum in Rome. It is considered the third largest amphitheatre after the Colosseum and the one in Capua, and could hold up to 40,000 spectators across three tiers of seating.
The building had four main entrances and a vast arena. The best-preserved part, after decades of excavation, is the underground level, about 7 metres deep: a system of gears and pulleys raised animals, people and scenery up to the arena, while a direct link with the Flegrean aqueduct and drainage channels allowed the arena to be flooded and emptied quickly.
The amphitheatre is part of the Parco archeologico dei Campi Flegrei; the nearby Macellum, known as the Tempio di Serapide, is a separate site.
