About the museum

Pozzuoli has never had a true diocesan museum in the past, because that function was performed by the numerous churches of the area, first among them the cathedral of San Procolo on the Rione Terra. The fire of 1964, neglect and thefts dispersed much of its heritage, and the evacuation of the Rione Terra (1970) and of the historic centre (1983–1984) because of bradyseism (ground uplift) further weakened the memory of the original places.

A first section of the museum was set up in 2000 at the Curia; the permanent seat was inaugurated on 20 May 2016 in the premises of the episcopal palace on the Rione Terra, once used by the diocesan seminary. Since 2020 the complex of the Basilica Cathedral and of the Diocesan Museum has been a cultural institution entrusted to the Fondazione “Centro Educativo Diocesano Regina Pacis”, with projects of social inclusion for young people in the area.

The itinerary retraces the history of the diocese from the first evangelisation, with 16th-century wooden sculptures, Baroque polychrome marbles, 17th- and 18th-century paintings and liturgical furnishings.
