About the museum
The Civica raccolta d’arte of Medole came into being towards the end of the 1970s on the initiative of a group of enthusiasts linked to the Pro Loco Medole association. The founders drew inspiration from the long local artistic tradition, represented by local painters such as the Pesenti and by the Mantuan and Milanese painters of the Chiarismo circle of Umberto Lilloni, whose father came from Medole.
To ensure its preservation and accessibility, in 1995 the Pro Loco donated the collected heritage to the Comune. The collection was housed for a long time in the complex of the Torre gonzaghesca, the last surviving trace of the ancient “Castrum Medulae”, and since 2019 it has had a new home in Palazzo Ceni.
The collections include some 250 paintings, prints, engravings and sculptures, largely by Mantuan artists, from the early 20th century to the present day, with names such as Vindizio Nodari Pesenti, Carlo Zanfrognini, Alfonso Monfardini, Guido Resmi, Arturo Raffaldini, Aldo and Paride Falchi, Oreste Marini and Carlo Malerba, and a significant presence of women painters such as Mimì Quilici Buzzacchi and Nene Nodari. The museum also regularly presents temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
