About the museum
The museum has been open to the public since 1969 and is housed in the 16th-century palace of the Aliprandi, which since 1608 has been home to the women’s congregation of the Vergini di Gesù, in the historic centre of Castiglione delle Stiviere. The collections originate from the paintings, furniture, books, documents, reliquaries and furnishings that the noblewomen of the college brought as dowries over the centuries.
The picture gallery includes many portraits of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga and of members of the Gonzaga family of the Castiglione branch, together with religious paintings by artists such as Bassano, Barocci, Cignaroli, Piazza and Venusti.
Among the objects on display are precious liturgical furnishings, ten chasubles (pianete) made from gold and silver fabrics of the 17th and 18th centuries, and the so-called clock of Saint Aloysius, built by Valin in 1567, restored and in working order. Also notable are the 18th-century furnishings of the refectory, one of the most important collections of pewter tableware in Italy, and the 17th-century wrought-iron grilles in Spanish style.
