About the museum
The Civico museo archeologico di Angera gathers the main historical evidence of the area, emerging from excavations begun in the late 19th century and still ongoing today. Angera has yielded the oldest traces of human presence in the Varese area, and already in antiquity it was an important stop along the river and lake trade routes that crossed the Alps.
The museum is housed in a 15th-century building in the centre of the town, the Palazzo del Pretorio, and is site no. 1 of the Museo Diffuso di Angera, which comprises more than fifty historical, artistic and landscape sites scattered through the village and its hamlets.
The display occupies the portico and two rooms: it tells the story of human settlement from the retreat of the glaciers, about 11,000 years ago, and holds numerous Roman-period finds, including inscriptions, architectural fragments and objects of everyday life. The ancient name Statio recalls the town’s function as a port, a meeting point between Mediterranean and Transalpine cultures. The museum makes publications of local interest available to visitors and has a multipurpose room for exhibitions, lectures and educational workshops.
