About the museum
The idea for a museum dedicated to the civilisation of the lands of the northern and eastern Adriatic was born together with the IRCI (Istituto regionale per la cultura istriano-fiumano-dalmata), the Trieste body responsible for preserving and promoting the historical and cultural heritage and the traditions of the Istrian peoples. In 1998 the City of Trieste entrusted the building at via Torino 8 to the IRCI under a concession, intended to house a library, an archive, offices and the museum.
Today the via Torino 8 site is closed to the public because the museum is moving to Magazzino 26 in the Porto Vecchio of Trieste. The first part of the new route is already set up on the second floor of the building and can be seen only by reservation, on guided visits organised by the IRCI together with visits to the nearby Magazzino 18, which holds the household belongings of Istrian, Fiuman and Dalmatian exiles.
The project envisages a route of eleven thematic rooms, which symbolically closes in the kitchen with an original hearth (fogolèr) and hood, and includes a large picture gallery of Istrian, Fiuman and Dalmatian artists and a cabinet of prints, maps and photographs. On the ground floor are the ticket office with bookshop and a room for temporary exhibitions and conferences.
