About the museum
The museum is in Piazza Oberdan, in a building designed specifically by the architect Umberto Nordio in 1934, with frescoes by Carlo Sbisà. The building stands on the site of the 18th-century Austrian barracks in which Guglielmo Oberdan was executed on 20 December 1882. The exhibition rooms date from the mid-thirties.
The adjoining shrine holds a statue by Attilio Selva and Oberdan's original cell. The museum grew largely thanks to the bequest of the writer and patriot Filippo Zamboni and to private donations.
The collections include documents, images, uniforms, works of art and objects from the Risorgimento period, from the uprisings of 1848 to the end of the First World War, with relics of Scipio Slataper, the Stuparich brothers and Nazario Sauro. In the Sala della Redenzione (Hall of Redemption) hangs Carlo Wostry's painting “Trieste XXX ottobre 1918”. After a period of closure for works, the museum reopened on 23 April 2026.
