About the museum
The Collezione Maramotti is the personal collection of contemporary art of Achille Maramotti (1927–2005), founder of Max Mara, and is housed in the former production site of the company at Via Fratelli Cervi 66, in Reggio Emilia. Max Mara’s first factory began operating in 1951; the present building was designed in 1957 by the architects Antonio Pastorini and Eugenio Salvarani and was enlarged twice in the 1960s by the Cooperativa Architetti e Ingegneri of Reggio Emilia.
When the company headquarters moved north of the city in 2003, the former factory was given over to exhibition space for the collection. The English architect Andrew Hapgood transformed it between 2003 and 2007, keeping the original structure and traces of its industrial past, and adding a new main entrance, a central courtyard and skylights.
The collection comprises several hundred works from 1945 to today, with over two hundred pieces on permanent display on the first and second floors, and represents the main Italian and international trends of the second half of the 20th century. On the ground floor there are a library and an archive with documents, catalogues and artists’ books linked to the artists of the collection. Among the well-known works are pieces by Enzo Cucchi, Jannis Kounellis, David Salle, Evgeny Antufiev and Claudio Parmiggiani.
