About the museum
The Egyptological collections of the University of Pisa originated in 1962, when Laura Birga Picozzi, a descendant of Ippolito Rosellini, made a first donation of finds collected by her illustrious ancestor on the Franco-Tuscan expedition to Egypt and Nubia of 1828–1829, led together with Champollion and leading to the world's first chair of Egyptology, in Pisa.
In 1964 the collection of Michela Schiff Giorgini was added, with about four hundred objects from the excavations in Sudan promoted by the University, and in 1968 a collection of about 1,500 ostraka from Oxyrhynchus, potsherds with texts in Demotic describing life in a small Egyptian oasis. Later the collections were enriched by donations, targeted purchases and the university's own excavation campaigns.
The seat at Via San Frediano 12 has been open to the public since 1994 and is part of the Sistema Museale di Ateneo. Since 16 July 2021 the collections have been named after Edda Bresciani, a world-renowned Egyptologist and emerita professor of the University of Pisa, who died in November 2020. The finds, from Egypt, Nubia and North Africa, have considerable educational and documentary value.
