About the museum
The palazzo on the Lungarno was commissioned by Francesco I de' Medici and built between 1583 and 1587 to a design by Bernardo Buontalenti. After Italian unification, under the Savoy, it took the name Palazzo Reale.
Today the museum tells the story of Medici and Lorraine collecting. The rooms hold court portraits by Bronzino, Alessandro Allori, Justus Suttermans and Antonio Franchi, the room of tapestries, weapons and armour of the Gioco del Ponte from the 15th to the 18th centuries, and works attributed to Rosso Fiorentino and to Raphael (the Miracle of the Two Hanged Men).
The collections are completed by the canvases of the Macchiaioli Francesco and Luigi Gioli, the bequest of Antonio Ceci with paintings, miniatures, medals, porcelain, small bronzes and drawings, and the gipsoteca (plaster-cast gallery) with paintings by Italo Griselli.
