About the museum

The Museum of Calabrian folk music instruments is located in Isca sullo Ionio, in the province of Catanzaro, and forms part of the Conservatorio di Musica Popolare della Calabria “Antonio Procopio”, born from a project of the association A.R.P.A., a consortium of associations and people active in research on Calabrian folk traditions.

The Conservatory is divided into four sections: the museum of Calabrian instruments and folk music, the workshop of traditional lutherie and restoration, the library with media library, and the school of folk music.

The museum displays more than 60 musical instruments, all working, grouped into the four families of aerophones, chordophones, membranophones and idiophones. It also keeps a large archive of photographs, audio and video recordings on Calabrian musical traditions, and promotes the sound, ritual and identity heritage of the region.
