About the museum
The museum, inaugurated on 23 October 2013, is housed in the former Bourbon arms factory of Mongiana and tells the story of the Reali Ferriere ironworks complex, founded by the Bourbons of Naples in 1770–71 and active until the 19th century. The buildings were gradually abandoned after activity ceased in 1872 for lack of orders.
The display illustrates the extraction of iron, the energy sources, the production of timber and charcoal, the road network, the technologies and products, and the condition of the workers. The route starts at the Fabbrica d'Armi, continues to the Foundry and reaches the remains of the Robinson ironworks, with the factory for iron bars and sheets and the Cubilot (cupola furnace) area.
Excavations in the foundry revealed the remains of three blast furnaces, Santa Barbara, San Ferdinando and San Francesco. The museum also serves as a visitor centre and is linked to the guided tours organised by the Pro Loco.
