About the museum
The building that houses the museum is the former oratory of Santa Maria Maddalena, in the hamlet of Orco, behind the parish church of San Lorenzo. It was probably built in the 17th century, in the same years as the adjacent church, and is first mentioned in a document of 1636 as the seat of the confraternity of the same name.
Having fallen out of use, in 1850 the oratory was sold in poor condition to be adapted as the seat of Orco's town hall; it then served as an oil press until the mid-20th century and afterwards as a warehouse. Since its restoration in 2008 it has housed the Museo del Territorio, which explores the natural, artistic and archaeological resources of the area, and it is used for cultural initiatives.
