About the museum
The core of the collection comes from the pharmacy opened in 1905 in Villacidro by Luigi Mancosu. In 1928 his heirs sold it to Dr Nino Fanni of Guspini, who set up a small laboratory for compounded preparations and chemical analyses.
A bomb attack on 15 August 1945 destroyed much of the most valuable equipment. The surviving pieces, along with those Dr Fanni later acquired from various parts of the world, including medicines distributed by the American army during the Second World War, were used to rebuild a traditional pharmacy in one corner of the building.
The museum, housed in a restored building known as Casa Lussu, displays furniture, apparatus and instruments from the 17th to the 20th century: shelving and preparation equipment from the old Fanni pharmacy, scales from the 17th century onwards, clinical thermometers from the early 19th century, mortars, three travelling pharmacy cases, the oldest from the late 18th century, and a small specialist library of antique pharmacopoeias.
