About the museum
The Fellini Museum was created on the initiative of the Comune di Rimini to dedicate a permanent place to the film director, who was born in the city in 1920. In April 2018 a design competition was held, won by the architect Orazio Carpenzano, who coordinated the architectural and exhibition design; the artistic and multimedia concept is by Studio Azzurro. The project, supported by the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Ministry of Culture, was included among the major national cultural heritage projects, and the museum opened on 19 August 2021.
It is a dispersed museum occupying several places in the historic centre. Castel Sismondo, the fortress built by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta from 1437 and later a barracks and prison until 1967, houses the most immersive route, conceived as a narrative museum. Palazzo del Fulgor, an eighteenth-century building also known as Palazzo Valloni, houses the exhibition and documentation spaces on its upper floors, while the ground floor contains the historic Cinema Fulgor, where Fellini saw his first films, with interiors designed by set designer Dante Ferretti.
The third site is Piazza Malatesta, the “square of dreams”, crossed by outdoor installations: a mist rising from a veil of water recalls the passage of the transatlantic liner Rex in Amarcord, while the Bosco dei nomi, designed by Tonino Guerra, commemorates the protagonists of cinema with carved stone flowers. The museum also offers an audio guide in web format, a podcast and an app dedicated to Fellini's places in Rimini.
