About the museum
The museum was established in 1999 by a group of citizens working to recover the history and traditions of Viserbella, a village on the Riviera north of Rimini. Today it is run by the cultural association E'scaion.
In the past Viserbella lived mainly on agriculture, with large vegetable gardens, while fishing was a supplementary activity for local families and developed after the Second World War. The boats most used, the battana and the battanino, were suited to shallow waters and to landing without a harbour. The main catches were clams, pesce azzurro (small pelagic fish), sole and eels, and the tratta was carried out with a large trawl net.
With the laying of breakwaters (scogliere) and the development of beach tourism, fishing had come to an end by the mid-1960s. The museum preserves the memory of that world, with a collection of historic photographs of the seafaring life of Viserbella and Rimini.
