About the museum
The GAMeC opened in 1991 and is a model of shared public-private management, founded by the municipality of Bergamo and TenarisDalmine. It is housed in the spaces of the former Monastero delle Dimesse e delle Servite, restored between the late 1980s and the early 1990s by Studio Gregotti Associati, and has about 1,500 square metres of exhibition space.
Alongside temporary exhibitions of international artists and a rich programme of activities for different audiences, the gallery develops and promotes, through donations and acquisitions, the modern and contemporary art collection of the city of Bergamo, which includes works by 20th-century Italian and international artists and by contemporary artists. Since 1998 it has developed educational programmes for the most diverse audiences; it is a founding member of AMACI, the association of Italian contemporary art museums.
The permanent route “Una Galleria, Tante Collezioni” (“One Gallery, Many Collections”), open from 26 January 2026 to 24 January 2027, unfolds across nine rooms and brings together, without chronological order, 20th-century masters such as Giacomo Manzù, the Spajani and Stucchi collections, works confiscated in Lombardy and donations of the new millennium. The GAMeC is preparing to move to a larger venue, the former Palazzetto dello Sport in Via Pitentino, whose works should be completed in 2027.
