About the museum
The museum is located in the old part of the Dominican monastery of Matris Domini, in the center of Bergamo, an enclosed women’s monastery whose church was consecrated in 1273. The museum is looked after by the cloistered nuns who live in the complex.
The route displays 13th-century frescoes from the refectory and the original church, together with 14th-century frescoes of great historical and artistic interest. Among the best-known works are the Giusti and the Beati (The Just and the Blessed), two trumpeting angels, Saint Peter enthroned and the Inferno, attributed to the Master of the Tree of Life, and scenes such as Jesus Among the Doctors, the Baptism of Jesus and the Miracle of the Wheel of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
Other frescoes are attributed to the First Master of Chiaravalle, including the Visitation, considered the synthesis of the collection for the freshness of its line. The display is enriched by a 16th-century fresco of Saint Dominic and by the 14th-century polychrome glass roundels in the apse of the small church, which cast coloured rays when lit by natural light.
