About the museum
The Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence is known above all for Michelangelo’s David, which is the focus of the route in the Tribuna designed to house it. The museum also holds other sculptures by Michelangelo, such as the Prigioni, the Giovane schiavo and the Saint Matthew, displayed in the gallery that leads to this masterpiece.
The rooms on the ground floor and first floor house a collection of Florentine painting from the 13th to the 16th century, with works by Giotto and his school, by Taddeo Gaddi, Lorenzo Monaco, Botticelli and other masters. The museum also includes a Gipsoteca (plaster cast gallery), and on the ground floor a collection of musical instruments from the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini is displayed, with about fifty instruments from the late 17th to the early 19th century.
Today the Galleria dell’Accademia is part of a museum system together with the Musei del Bargello, with which it shares a combined ticket. The museum offers accessibility tools, such as maps and tactile routes, a visit introduction kit and a social story to prepare for the visit.
