About the museum
The museum occupies the monumental part of the former Dominican convent of San Marco, designed by Michelozzo for Cosimo de’ Medici and built between 1437 and 1443. Between 1438 and 1445 the Beato Angelico, a friar of the convent, worked there, decorating the spaces with frescoes intended for the meditation of the religious.
After the suppression of the religious orders in the 19th century, the building became state property and the museum opened in 1869. Today it holds the largest collection of works by Beato Angelico, with painted panels and frescoes that can be admired in the cloister, the chapter house, the dormitory and the cells.
The route also includes works by Ghirlandaio, Paolo Uccello, Fra Bartolomeo and the workshop of the Della Robbia, as well as Michelozzo’s library, considered a model of Renaissance architecture. Access to ancient manuscripts and archive documents for study is possible by appointment.
