About the museum
Palazzo Doria Pamphilj developed from a 16th-century nucleus, the residence of Cardinal Fazio Santoro, and grew over five centuries through extensions and inheritances passing between great noble families: Della Rovere, Aldobrandini, Pamphilj and Doria. The result is a complex that combines architecture, art and the history of Italian noble houses.
The Galleria Doria Pamphilj occupies the exhibition heart of the palace: the four wings that look onto the courtyard with Renaissance arcades, and two large halls, the Sala Aldobrandini and the Sala dei Primitivi. The present appearance derives from the renovation of the oldest part commissioned by Prince Camillo Pamphilj the Younger, completed between 1731 and 1734.
The paintings are still arranged according to the late 18th-century display described in a manuscript of the historical archive from 1767, so the visitor walks through the rooms with the atmosphere of that time. The private collection includes works by Caravaggio, Titian, Raphael, the Carracci and Bernini, Flemish masters of the Baroque, Claude Lorrain and Velázquez. The museum is still run by the family through the company Amministrazione Doria Pamphilj.
