About the museum
The palazzo was built in the 15th century at the wish of Cardinal Pietro Barbo, later Pope Paul II (1464–1471), and is one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Rome. For centuries it was the residence of popes, cardinals and ambassadors, and its guests included figures such as Erasmus of Rotterdam and Charles V.
Part of the building passed to the Republic of Venice, which made it a diplomatic seat; after the fall of Venice the palazzo was for over a century the residence of the Austro-Hungarian ambassadors. During the First World War it passed to the Kingdom of Italy and was turned into a museum; later it was used by Benito Mussolini as a seat of propaganda.
Today the Museo nazionale del Palazzo di Venezia is part of the VIVE institute (Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia) and holds collections of applied and decorative arts that are being redisplayed. Visitors can see rooms such as the Appartamento Barbo, the Sala del Mappamondo, the Sala Regia and the Giardino Grande, which has free admission.
