About the museum
The Galleria d'arte moderna Giannoni opened to the public in March 2011 and houses the collection that Alfredo Giannoni assembled between the late 19th century and the 1930s, first as a private collection and then intended for public enjoyment. Giannoni gave it to the city of Novara through three bequests, in 1930, 1935 and 1938, for a total of about nine hundred works.
The collection mainly reflects his taste for Italian painting from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, of naturalist and symbolist character with some divisionist works; his interest in contemporary avant-gardes was less marked. His choices were influenced by his friendship with the painters Plinio Nomellini and Cesare Vinzio, who advised him on purchases. In 2021 a new exhibition route was inaugurated, arranged by iconographic themes rather than chronology and covering the years 1860 to 1940.
The gallery occupies the first floor of the Complesso monumentale del Broletto, in the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo della Referenderia. These buildings, together with the Palazzo dell'Arengo and the Palazzetto dei Paratici, form a single complex that took shape between the 16th century and the late 18th century. The current display features 158 works, of which about 115 come mainly from the Giannoni collection, while 43 paintings from the bequest of the lawyer Cassietti are shown in a themed room on the second floor.
