About the museum
The museum is housed in the Castello Visconteo Sforzesco in Galliate, in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The fortress has medieval origins: an enclosure with a moat and a chapel are documented as early as 1057. Its present form is due to the Visconti and, above all, the Sforza, who between 1476 and 1496 turned it into a hunting residence for the Milanese court.
From 1717 the castle passed to various private owners, and was later partly acquired by the Municipality, which restored some parts. Today it houses the civic library and two museum spaces.
The Museo d’arte contemporanea “Angelo Bozzola” has occupied the north-east tower and part of the wall walk since 1998. It holds over 140 sculptures, paintings and graphic works made between 1954 and 1988 and donated to the town by the Galliate-born artist Angelo Bozzola. The works are spread across the tower, the basements, the north walk, the courtyard and the moat. In the south wing there is also a room dedicated to the racing driver Achille Varzi, who was born in Galliate.
