About the museum
ExpoRisorgimento, short for “Esposizione museale risorgimentale della città di Novara e del suo territorio”, was set up in the early 2000s on the initiative of the Associazione Amici del Parco della Battaglia, in cooperation with the City of Novara and with the support of the ATL Novara (local tourist board). Because of its position, Novara was at the centre of the events that led to Italian unification: from the uprisings of 1821 to the arrival of Lombard patriots after 1848, from the battle of 23 March 1849 to the campaign of 1859.
A first space opened in the Convitto “Carlo Alberto” in December 2011, at the end of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of unification, and was enlarged in 2014; since June 2018 the exhibition has been housed in Novara Castle. More than 800 objects relating to the Novara area are on show, from the Savoyard conquest of Novara (1734) to the breach of Porta Pia (1870), covering the uprisings of 1821, the battle of 1849, the Crimean campaign (1855) and the Wars of Independence.
Among the most interesting pieces are the flag of the Guardia Nazionale di Novara from 1848, Cavour's death mask, relics from the battlefield of the Bicocca, equipment, weapons and uniforms of soldiers, documents, posters, period photographs and prints, including the collection of Franco Guerra. The exhibition has an educational approach and allows visitors to pick up some objects to understand their weight and how they worked. It is run by the association with the voluntary work of its members.
