About the museum
The Galleria Sabauda was founded by King Charles Albert on 2 October 1832, his birthday, and was initially housed in Palazzo Madama. The core consisted of the paintings of the Savoy dukes and kings, gathered from the late 16th century and coming from the family residences and from the Genoese palace of the Durazzo family.
In 1860 Victor Emmanuel II donated the entire collection to the Italian State. In 1865 the gallery was moved to the Palazzo dei Nobili, in via Accademia delle Scienze, where it remained until 2014, when it moved to its present seat, the Manica Nuova of the Palazzo Reale. In 1930 the collection was enriched by the collection of the industrialist Riccardo Gualino.
Today the gallery displays over eight hundred works: on the ground floor the Piedmontese masters of the Renaissance; on the first floor Italian and foreign collections from the 15th to the early 17th century; on the second floor works from the 17th to the 19th century, the Gualino collection, and the Flemish and Dutch paintings of Prince Eugene of Savoy-Soissons. It is part of the Musei Reali di Torino, with the same ticket as the Palazzo Reale.
