About the museum
In 1563 Duke Emanuel Philibert established Turin as the capital of the Savoy duchy and installed the court in the old episcopal palace. In 1584 Charles Emmanuel I commissioned Ascanio Vitozzi to design a new palace; after 1643 the works passed to Amedeo di Castellamonte and then to Carlo Morello.
In the 17th and 18th centuries the palace was enriched with frescoes and large allegorical canvases, and after the royal title obtained in 1713, Victor Amadeus II entrusted Filippo Juvarra with the representative and governmental area. Benedetto Alfieri later designed the decorations of the second floor. In the time of Charles Albert many rooms were renovated under the direction of Pelagio Palagi, and in 1862 the new Scalone d’Onore took shape.
With the transfer of the capital to Florence in 1864 and then to Rome, the palace lost its function as a residence and, after the birth of the Italian Republic in 1946, passed to the State. Today it is one of the seats of the Musei Reali di Torino, together with the Galleria Sabauda, the Armeria Reale, the Museo di Antichità, the Giardini Reali and the Biblioteca Reale: a single ticket gives access to the whole route.
