About the museum
The oldest core of the collections derives from the collecting of the Camaldolese monks of Classe, in particular Pietro Canneti. When the religious orders were suppressed, their holdings passed to the municipality, which founded the Museo Classense in 1804. In 1969 it was decided to give Ravenna an art museum: the works on the Loggetta Lombardesca were completed in 1972, and the following year the Galleria dell'Accademia took the name Pinacoteca Comunale. In 2002 the Pinacoteca became the “Museo d’Arte della città di Ravenna”, an institution of the municipality.
The seat is the former abbey of Santa Maria in Porto, whose cloister dates from the early 16th century. Its best-known feature is the Loggetta Lombardesca, with five arches, the work of craftsmen from Lombardy and Campione led by Tullio Lombardo. The exhibition space covers about 2,000 square metres.
The picture gallery holds more than 300 paintings and sculptures from the 14th to the 20th century, with a core of 16th-century works from Romagna and the Veneto. Its symbol is the funerary slab of Guidarello Guidarelli, made by Tullio Lombardo in 1525. The collection of contemporary mosaics comprises around ninety works, beginning with the mosaics created for the 1959 exhibition with artists such as Chagall, Guttuso and Vedova. In 2026 the Galleria Paolo Roversi was inaugurated, with photographs donated by the photographer to his native city.
