About the museum
The Palazzo di Teodorico stands in the area of the ancient imperial residence of Ravenna, built by Honorius when the court moved to the new capital of the West in AD 402, later maintained and enlarged by Theodoric and finally the seat of the exarch, the highest Byzantine authority in Italy. The building visible today is identified with the narthex and façade of the church of San Salvatore ad Calchis, and according to the entry of the Ministry of Culture it is the only architectural survival of the 8th century in Ravenna.
The façade remained walled up for a long time and was brought back to light by the restorations directed by Corrado Ricci, Italy's first superintendent. From 1633 a porphyry basin was set into the façade, believed to be the sarcophagus of the Ostrogothic king, and now kept in the Mausoleo di Teodorico.
On the first floor about a third of the mosaic floors recovered in the excavations of 1908–1914 in the area of the imperial palace are displayed. The collection covers about six centuries, from opus sectile of the 1st–2nd centuries to figurative mosaics of the 5th century, and offers a true journey into the mosaic floor. The building is part of the Musei nazionali di Ravenna.
