About the museum

The Musei Civici di Monza, whose public institution dates from 1935, grew up around an important collection that came to the Comune in 1923 with the Galbesi Segrè bequest. The holdings were later enriched by donations, purchases and the legacies of the city's main artistic events of the 20th century, such as the Biennali, the ISIA, the Premio di pittura Città di Monza and the Biennale Giovani. The collections include paintings and sculptures by Monza artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, a substantial fund of drawings and prints, and the Gabinetto delle Stampe, with more than 13,000 old and modern sheets.

The current seat, in Via Teodolinda, is the so-called Casa degli Umiliati, a restructured medieval building belonging to the Umiliati religious order, which was dissolved in 1571 by Saint Charles Borromeo; the complex preserves original elements, 18th-century features and recent interventions for its use as a museum.

The display presents 140 pieces in 13 sections on the ground floor and the first floor, readable in chronological order from Roman antiquity to the 21st century, or by themes such as portraiture, landscape and sacred art. With a project funded by the PNRR (Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan), the museum has been made accessible independently to people with physical, sensory and cognitive disabilities, with three-dimensional models, audio descriptions, videos in LIS and simplified routes.
