About the museum
The museum was conceived and launched by the Duca degli Abruzzi (Duke of the Abruzzi) and opened in 1929; it is housed in the Casa delle Guide in Courmayeur. It was renovated to mark the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the guides' society and the restoration of the historic building.
It is laid out over two floors. On the ground floor are the registers of guides who have died, the refuge books, the society's first white banner and the boots worn by Queen Margherita on the 1904 expedition to Svalbard. Other sections are devoted to polar expeditions, a tool used in attempts on the south ridge of the Aiguille Noire de Peuterey, and material from expeditions to Africa, the Himalayas, Tibet and India.
Among the best-known exhibits are the relief model of Monte Bianco at a scale of 1:10,000 by Alessio Nebbia and a model of K2 by Mario Fantin, donated in memory of guide Mario Puchoz. The museum also hosts rotating photographic exhibitions.
