About the museum
The museum occupies the first floor of the Guzman powder magazine, a building erected in 1692 by the Flemish architect Ferdinand De Grunembergh in the Spanish period. The building was first a general warehouse and then a store for gunpowder; the name derives from the nearby bastion dedicated to the Spanish viceroy Enrique de Guzmán.
The display brings together archaeological finds from different periods, from prehistory to the Etruscan-Roman age, recovered in the territory from the early 19th century onwards or purchased in the second half of the 20th century. The materials are divided into three groups: the Etruscan necropolis of the Orbetello isthmus, the Talamone area, and a group of purchases from Pescia Romana, Chiarone, San Donato and Monte Argentario.
Among the most important pieces are the objects from the necropolis belonging to the wealthy Etruscan aristocracy of the 4th century BC (embossed gold ornaments, bronzes and banquet ceramics, bronze mirrors including one with the figure “Cathesan”, identified by an Etruscan inscription) and, from Talamonaccio, the decorative elements of the Hellenistic temple and two votive deposits with weapons, miniature tools and helmets.
