About the museum
The Museo archeologico di Taormina is housed in the Palazzo della Badia Vecchia, in Via Circonvallazione, a 14th-century building that began as a defensive tower on the city walls. It collects finds from the archaeological research carried out in the ancient city since the 19th century.
Among the works on display are a collection of Late Hellenistic sculptures, vessels from cisterns of the early imperial age and precious glass cinerary urns from the necropolis. The same necropolis also yielded the marble sarcophagus depicting Psyche and Dionysian figures, dating from the 2nd century AD.
The building is one of the city's medieval monuments: the palace has Ghibelline battlements, twin windows in different styles and an external staircase, and it is decorated with a polychrome band of stones in different colours.
