About the museum
Cividate Camuno lies in the middle Valle Camonica, south of Breno. Traces of the valley's ancient settlement have been found on the castle hill, from the Neolithic to the remains of terraces and huts of the Copper Age. Towards the end of the 1st century BC, as part of the conquest and Romanisation of the Alps, a proper city was founded by the River Oglio; its theatre and amphitheatre, baths, several private buildings and necropolises have been uncovered.
The museum, opened in 1981, was expanded in 2010 with a new exhibition and education space, and in 2011 with a route devoted to the rich decoration of a domus excavated in the area of the forum. On 11 June 2021 the new site in the historic centre opened, with a completely revised display and expanded collections.
The route, organised into eight thematic sections, displays Roman finds from Cividate Camuno and the surrounding area: material from the settlements, a rich epigraphic collection, architectural and sculptural elements, domus frescoes and grave goods with pendants and amulets in gold and silver. The Sala della Minerva is dedicated to places of worship, in particular to the sanctuary of Minerva at Spinera in Breno, which was in use from the early Iron Age to the late Roman period.
