About the museum
After the Roman conquest of the Valle Camonica in 16 BC, present-day Cividate Camuno became the main centre of the valley. Towards the end of the 1st century BC a true town arose on the banks of the Oglio, of which the theatre and amphitheatre, thermal buildings, private houses and a necropolis have been brought to light.
The archaeological park preserves the remains of these two entertainment buildings, built on the natural slope of the Barberino hill. The amphitheatre has been excavated in full along its perimeter structures, while about a third of the theatre is visible today. The site is completed by a sacellum and a few small thermal and service rooms.
The park covers about 20,000 square metres, partly landscaped with plants and trees. At the entrance is a small building for welcoming visitors and for the security staff. The park is part of the network of state cultural sites of the Valle Camonica, together with the Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Valle Camonica, which holds the finds from the excavations.
