About the museum
The Museo Camuno (CaMus) was founded in the early 20th century on the initiative of the association Pro Valle Camonica and opened in 1923. It now occupies the second and third floors of the Palazzo della Cultura in Breno, an old 15th-century residence that belonged to the Federici family and that also houses the district library, the operational centre of the Valle Camonica library system, an auditorium and spaces for temporary exhibitions.
The route unfolds over ten rooms in chronological and thematic order. The first presents coats of arms and portraits of members of the Camunian nobility and clergy in the early modern period; then come icons and sacred paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries, masterpieces of Brescian Renaissance painting and works of the 17th century. Two sections gather sculptures, liturgical and domestic furnishings, applied-art objects and ceramics, largely from the Camunian area.
On the upper floor are Lombard and Venetian paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries, works of Camunian and Lombard painting from the late 19th to the 20th century, and an ethno-anthropological section on the material culture of the area. In the loggia on the first floor a selection of pre-Roman and Roman archaeological finds is displayed, partly collected by Putelli at the start of the 20th century.
