About the museum
Altinum was a Venetic and later Roman centre active from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD on the northern edge of the Venetian lagoon. The first museum, designed by Ferdinando Forlati, opened on 29 May 1960 with fewer than a thousand objects. Today the building is used as a store, while the collections exceed 40,000 finds.
The State bought the buildings at the Fornace location in 1984, but restoration stalled for lack of funds. With European and regional funding of about €6 million, work resumed in 2009. The new seat, housed in a nineteenth-century rural building, was inaugurated on 12 December 2014 and opened permanently on 4 July 2015, with about 1,800 m² of exhibition space.
On the ground floor the prehistory of the lagoon edge and the history of the centre in the Iron Age are illustrated, with its necropolises and horse burials. The first floor is devoted to Roman Altino, with jewellery, glass, marble portraits, toys and objects of everyday life. The second floor, devoted to the Roman necropolises and late antiquity, is being set up.
About 500 metres away is the archaeological area, which includes the harbour gate of the 1st century BC, a stretch of an urban cardo and the House of the Panther with its mosaic in the atrium. The museum and the area are part of the UNESCO site “Venice and its Lagoon”.
