About the museum
The museum is located in the sacristy of the parish church of San Pietro Martire, in Murano, and since 1815 has housed sacred furnishings from churches and convents suppressed during the Napoleonic period, largely from the demolition of the Scuola di San Giovanni dei Battuti.
The church was built in 1348 together with a Dominican convent and was originally dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. It was commissioned by Marco Michiel and consecrated on 17 September 1417. After the fire of 1474 it was rebuilt in its present form in 1511. Closed in 1806, it reopened for worship in 1813. The collection includes chalices and silverware from the 12th to the 19th century, paintings and tapestries from the 14th to the 19th century, original vestments and sacred vessels from the 17th century, and the largest reliquary on the island of Murano.
