About the museum
The museum was established by royal decree in 1870 and is one of the oldest archaeological museums in Italy. Its collections derive largely from the collecting of the Medici and the Lorraine, to which material from excavations in Tuscany and from Egypt has been added over time.
The seat is the Palazzo della Crocetta, with a historic garden that houses reconstructions of Etruscan tombs. The collections include the Egyptian section, one of the largest in Italy, the topographical section of Etruria and important collections of Greek vases, including the Vaso François.
Since the exhibition spaces have long been insufficient, over one hundred thousand objects are kept in storerooms and are presented to the public only on the occasion of exhibitions. The museum also has an archive, a photographic library, a restoration laboratory and a library.
