About the museum
Since 2003 the Castello Beccadelli Bologna in Marineo has housed the Museo regionale della Valle dell’Eleuterio. The castle was built in the mid-16th century by the Bologna family: in 1552 Francesco Beccadelli Bologna, to whom Charles V had granted the fief, had the first hundred houses built, from which the present Marineo grew.
The building, the residence of the feudal lord, extends over several floors adapted to the terrain: on the ground floor are storerooms and rooms for processing farm produce, while the piano nobile (main floor) has spacious rooms with traces of decoration.
The museum collects the historical, archaeological, artistic and documentary evidence of the entire district, in particular Punic materials (statuettes, arulae and coins), Hellenistic and Late Roman grave goods, and fragments of Arab glazed amphorae and of the Norman-Swabian period.
