About the museum
The Museo Byron is housed in Palazzo Guiccioli, in the centre of Ravenna, where the poet George Gordon Byron (1788–1824) lived with Teresa Gamba Guiccioli during some of the most productive years of his short life; in Ravenna he wrote, among other works, “Don Juan”. The museum grew out of the collection of Byron memorabilia that Teresa Gamba gathered throughout her life, now owned by the municipality of Ravenna.
It is a literary museum: it tells of the poet as a traveller in Europe and the East, of the “fatal” hero and the dandy who bent his life to a poetic ideal and became the prototype of the Romantic hero. The works and memorabilia of Teresa are displayed in the neoclassical rooms of the palace and narrated through multimedia displays.
The palace, restored by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Ravenna, also houses the Museo del Risorgimento and the Museo delle Bambole; a single ticket gives access to all the museums.
