About the museum
The Ravenna Risorgimento collection consists of the Collezione Risorgimentale Classense, formed from donations by private citizens, to which were added the Collezione Mario Guerrini, bequeathed to the Municipality of Ravenna in 2002, and the Risorgimento collection of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Ravenna.
The collections are displayed on the piano nobile of Palazzo Guiccioli, in Via Cavour, a historic residence linked to the cultural and political events of nineteenth-century Ravenna. Lord Byron lived here with Teresa Gamba Guiccioli, and the first conspiracies that led to the Carbonari uprisings of 1820–21 took place in the palace; from 1836 the physician and patriot Luigi Carlo Farini lived here for some years. The Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Ravenna, the owner of the building, oversaw its restoration and its transformation into a museum centre.
The exhibition route is both chronological and thematic: paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, weapons, uniforms, posters, medals, relics and correspondence, together with a collection of edicts, decrees and proclamations, show the passage from the great currents of European thought to Ravenna's society and to the wars of the Risorgimento. An immersive multimedia narrative offers an overview of the period between the Napoleonic age and the end of the nineteenth century.
